James and Nina trudged into Accaliko sometime before dinner. He was hoping he could avoid Detti long enough to get home and pack some meals for them before they left. Detti was bound to give him an earful for being late on the most important day of her life but it wasn't his fault! The celebration in Danali town was incredible and he just ended up getting sidetracked... No big deal!
James put Nina back in her pokeball and opted to navigate through the festival himself. If he could just make it home... Oh, if only he didn't stand out so much in a crowd. And if only Detti was easier to spot. Tiny little thing... He glanced around nervously as he shuffled to his house and stepped in.
"Mama, I'm home!" He called. He was very quickly greeted by the tiny, chubby figure that was his mother. She chattered excitedly about how much he'd grown, how thin he was, et cetera. She reassured him that he already packed plenty for him and Detti alike, then gave him spare cash as well. Then just as quickly as he was greeted, he was pushed out.
For what must have been the tenth time, Detti called out her Budew so she had someone to listen to her complaints. For what must have been the tenth time, Violetta made a tottering little about-turn, then gave her owner an apologetic look that would no doubt have been accompanied by a shrug if she had shoulders. She didn't know who she was looking for, but she was doing her best anyway. Not that Detti would have been able to give her the most flattering description of what to look for. 'A disappointment' wasn't much of a physical description, after all.
The festival had been almost completely explored by now. Detti and Violetta had shared a bottle of water as they trudged round, admiring the festivities and stalls they passed. But as time passed by and James refused to turn up, Detti's mood had gradually soured. By now they were loitering in the centre of Accaliko, with Detti glowering in the direction of Route 1 and occasionally calling out Violetta just long enough to grumble at her.
Was that...? No, it had to be a false alarm. The figure disappeared among the crowd as quickly as it had appeared. The hair had looked about right, but sure James would have noticed her? ...Now it was back. And it was James. Of all the...
"Mr. James!"
Literally marching up to him, her arms swinging and her cheeks puffed out angrily, she jabbed a finger at him. "Mr. James, this is the most important day of my life and you! Were! Not! Here!"
Ah-- There she was. James looked down at the knee-high terror and frowned a little "I'm here now! I wasn't expecting you to be ready this early! I left around this time when I was your age... Well. Younger. But still." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I got food packed. Annnd I thought I'd get you something nice while I was out."
He knelt down to her height and fished her gift out. An ultra ball. He pressed the button to expand it and held it out to her, "An ultra ball. Cost a pretty penny, but today's a pretty special day, yeah? Save it for a special occasion."
She wouldn't let her grumpy expression crack as she took the Ultra Ball from him, cradling it in her hands like an egg, and transferred it to the safety of her bag.
"Thank you, Mr. James. I appreciate it when you try and buy your way back into my favour."
With a little huff she retrieved the Poké Ball instead and held it out towards James.
"I got my starter ages ago. Your father is wonderful." She paused before continuing, "Would you like to meet her?"
"I got..." Detti pressed the button then tossed the Poké Ball into the air (something that she'd seen Trainers do on television, and which she thought looked cool). Except when the mechanism kicked in and the Poké Ball opened, it was pointing straight downwards. As a beam of red light flashed down at her, Detti had to step back to avoid having a Budew materialise under her feet - or worse, on her head. Violetta blinked and gazed up at James timidly, unaware of the narrow escape her summoning had been.
"A Budew!" Detti completed. She couldn't help smiling at the appearance of her dear little Pokémon. She could only stay grumpy for so long, especially with Violetta there. "Her name is Violetta. She's a Grass type. Your father says she'll release pollen soon."
James fell back to avoid the Budew landing on him as well. His face lit up as the confused little plant pokemon materialized in front of him.
"Well hey, Violetta," he fished a treat out from his bag and held it out to her, "Does she know her name yet?" He crossed his legs and tried to coax the pokemon into his lap, "She should start blooming tomorrow if all goes well. It's never an exact date, just when the weather warms up." James directed his attention back to Detti, "Budews are fond of clear bodies of water. We should take her swimming sometime."
Violetta nosed at the treat, tottering closer to James until she bumped into his knees. Meanwhile, Detti beamed down at her, delighted by the news that she would be releasing pollen as early as tomorrow. Her previous irritation at James' lateness had dissipated. Almost.
"You're so clever, Violetta!" she squeaked before looking up to James, no longer bothering to look sulky. "Can she swim, Mr. James? She has no arms... Does she float?" She wouldn't let her precious starter float away in some current, nor sink to the bottom of some pool. Violetta would have to be very closely supervised when it came to swimming - Detti had no idea how the Budew would take to water. With a jolt, she realised something that only made her grin widen.
"Violetta can swim with Lola!" Wouldn't it be perfect if James' Marill got along with her little Budew? They could spend the day at some pool or other - Lake Addi, perhaps? - and play about in the water. James would probably spend much of the day napping under a tree, she expected. But it sounded like a great way to spend a sunny day. "We'll take a picnic somewhere and Lola can teach her to swim!"
James scooped Violetta up gingerly and placed her in his lap, "There you go."
He looked back up at Detti and smiled, "That sounds like a great plan. Let's see how they get along, first." He fished out the pokeball and let Lola out. She was a chubby little Marill that definitely should've evolved by then, but he liked her best as a Marill.
Lola looked around a moment, then beamed and tottled over to Detti, holding her stubby arms up to be held.
"Lola-- Ah, well. Looks like she missed you, huh?"
Violetta gave a little trill as she found herself set in this new man's lap. He seemed gentle enough. Certainly the way he'd picked her up suggested he had experience with Pokémon. She liked him. His fingers smelled like food. She gave the nearest finger a little nip to try and get some of the flavour off it.
"Ahhh! Hello, Miss Lola!" Detti bent down and scooped up the Marill, holding her under her little arms and standing up with Lola inches from her face. "How are you, young lady? How are you? I have Pokémon now, too. Maybe you'll be friends!"
Lola let out a squeaky little chirp and wiggled in Detti's arms happily. Of course she could be friends with Violetta! She was an excellent pokemon. The best, actually. That meant he had to be friendly to all other pokemon, too. Obviously.
"Aw, are you hungry, Violetta?" James let her nibble and felt around in his backpack for a sandwich his mother had so lovingly made and cut into triangles. Triangles were best.
He pulled out a slice and held it out to Detti, "You should be the one to feed her. She's gotta like you the best, chica."
That was a good noise, right? The Marill certainly seemed happy to Detti. Then again she usually did. James may have his failings - a lot of failings - but nobody could deny that he looked after his Pokémon with the tenderness of a parent. And sure enough there he was, digging out a sandwich for Detti to feed her Budew with. This almost made up for how hideously late he was.
"Thank you, Mr. James." There was no question that Violetta liked her best, because Detti was the best. But it was kind of him anyway. Violetta watched the sandwich pass over her head with her head tilted a little, following the food's progress until Detti brought it down to her mouth. She gave the approaching sandwich a sniff.
"Do you want to eat, Violetta? This is for you, from Mr. James' mother."
The Budew took a bite and gazed off into the distance as she chewed. A few seconds later she had made up her mind. She wriggled in delight, tiny feet flailing against James as she gave a chirrup through a mouthful of bread. As soon as she'd swallowed she dove back for another bite. Detti's free hand went to pat James on the head.
"That must be a good sandwich! Your mother is wonderful too."
