Kaia Town was not a big place. It was host to more ghosts than people, with weather that would suck the life out of anyone. Located in the north, Kaia was plagued with a chill that lingered even through summer. Though the trees did grow green and full, the temperature hardly climbed above “a bit brisk”.
In the southeast corner of town, almost isolated from the rest of the settlement, trainers of all ages and experience could find the town’s gym. On top of being lonely, the building was plain and unwelcoming. The outside walls showed little more than a sign indicating what the structure was, and various sloppily airbrushed graffiti stamps. The entryway was sunken into the concrete walls, with an ashtray just inside of the concave and a set of heavy industrial doors leading inside.
The first room was a bright, white waiting room, LED lights reflecting off the starkness of the walls. Off to the right was a door with a thick metal handle and a deadbolt, which was locked from the other side. To the left, an uncomfortable looking bench that blended in to the walls. And in the middle, another set of heavy industrial doors.
These doors lead into a much darker area. A room the size of a warehouse; black walls framing a maze of dimly lit alleyways lined by empty shop buildings. It was warmer in the alleys, and the air felt heavier. It was silent and still, save for the soft scuffling or muffled conversations of Gym Trainers, and the buzzing of the lights. If you listened close enough, the soft chatter of passing ghosts can be caught on the draft. The shop façades formed distinct roads each trainer could take. Some were dead ends, some lead home, some circled around, and one brought you to the Leader. A few buildings were unlocked and provided short cuts to the end, or a mandatory detour. Each alley was illuminated by neon signs hanging in the windows of shops, maybe a street light if it hasn’t burned out. Gym Trainers are found at random dead ends and intersections. Most are punks and bikers, but a couple security officers hang around too. Depending on whether or not they’re feeling generous, gym trainers can offer hints on how to get to the end when they’re defeated in battle.
The final stage is a bus station, where Ryan can be found waiting on the benches or taking pictures of his Pokemon. If you’re sneaky enough, you’d also find a mini fridge and pantry hidden in the brick pillars of the bus terminal. This area is where you challenge Ryan and the field on which you battle on.
