It had been a while since Alex had travelled through Samadi Desert, preferring to hop onto her Staraptor and fly to her destination. However her place of interest was within the sandy region: the Fossil Lab. Alex had found a strange rock during her travels and wanted it inspected by the resident scientist. As she approached the door, she thought about how best to address such a person. Would they have a doctorate? Did they have much concern for manners? She hoped that whoever they were, they would humour her request.
Opening the door, she first thing she saw was the mess around a peculiar machine. As she scanned the room, she took note of the bag of treats and the revival machine next to it. Seeing nothing else in the room, she decided to announce her presence.
It was Creation Day and Alphys was spending the day watching anime and lounging about upstairs. She wasn't usually so lazy, but she didn't particularly celebrate the day and didn't expect any visitors. Who would come all the way out to a lab in the desert on the day everyone would be starting their Pokemon journey?
So she didn't hear the door open, not even noticing she had someone in the lab until they called out to her. She quickly fumbled, pausing her show and taking a moment to collect herself. Ugh, how embarrassing. The place was more of a mess than she'd have liked, and some of her dvds and figurines still strewn about the downstairs part of the lab. She was probably already making an awful impression. Great.
She hurried down from the second floor, hoping to quickly greet whoever it was before they could judge her too badly.
"S-sorry, sorry! I was upstairs-- doing work. Just, working on a few things." She covered lamely, tidying up a small pile on a nearby desk idly as she spoke. Okay, not too bad. Most of the things down here were actual work papers or obscure anime merch, and there wasn't that much of it. They probably wouldn't even notice that sort of stuff mixed in with all the sciencey things! She could try tell herself that, at least.
"Hi, it's, nice to meet you." She did the best to collect herself, walking over to the woman who had just entered and offering her hand to her. "I'm Alphys."
The woman who was quickly tidying up seemed to be a little scatterbrained, but Alex knew better than anyone that appearances could be deceiving. When she offered her hand, Alex raised her own hand and shook the scientist's.
"Hello, doctor Alphys, I'm Alex." She said, really hoping the blonde in front of her was a doctor. Remembering her purpose for being at the lab, she opened her bag and retrieved the rough, almost spherical rock from its depths and held it in front of the scientist. "I'm sorry for coming to you on Creation Day, but I was wondering whether this rock was some kind of fossil."
At the same time, she remembered her team needed healing, as she was ambushed by a couple of Sandiles. While her team was quick to knock out the horde, they didn't come out unscathed.
"Do you mind if I also use your machine to heal my Pokemon?"
"I-it's fine!" Alphys brushed it off, hoping to save some face by making a better impression from here on out. Alex seemed so together and polite, Alphys couldn't help but feel she had some catching up to do.
She took the fossil, quickly forgetting about her worries for a moment. At a glance it wasn't like any fossil she'd ever seen. Was this something completely new? She didn't want to say as much yet, not before getting a good look at it first.
"Oh, sure." Alphys set it down gently on a table, not that you really had to be all that careful with fossils nor rocks; whichever it was, and walked over to the healing machine. A boot up and a couple button presses later and it was ready for the pokeballs to be set inside. The machine was hardy enough and Alex seemed nice so Alphys didn't bother keeping an eye on her with the machine. And, in all honesty, she was more interested in the possible fossil.
She turned on the lamp sitting on the table, getting a better look at it now.
"Where did you find this?" She asked over her shoulder, still not quite recognizing it. Something nagged at the back of her mind, as if she should know it. It seemed almost familiar, but as she mentally went through all the fossils she knew she still couldn't place it.
She turned back to face Alex, half ready to accept it was just some rock but hoping knowing where it came from would help all the same. And yet it didn't quite seem like a natural rock, the shape of it was too precise despite it's rough surface. She still couldn't shake the feeling she should recognize it, either.
While Alphys took a closer look at the strange rock, Alex placed her Pokeballs in the healing machine. She was amazed on how quickly her team was healed by the device; this would have been very useful if it was there when she challenged the Pokemon League, but that was a long time ago now. She put the balls back into her bag and thought about the source of the round rock.
It's source was at the tip of her tongue; Alex could see the place in her mind, but it's location was unknown. Looking at the rock under the lamp wasn't helping her, either. If it made it easier to discern the source, Alex closed her eyes and thought harder about where she found it.
"I remember finding it in some sort of cave a few days ago" she said, trying to remember any place that could fit that description. The cave was littered with rocks, but this one stood out despite looking like a perfectly normal rock. Even if she couldn't remember herself, she hoped she gave enough information for the good scientist to figure it out.
"The rock just happened to catch my eye; I thought it could be some sort of rare stone or a new fossil, but I'm not an expert on this sort of thing." She said, opening her eyes so she could properly address the scientist.
Unfortunately, all thought about the stone was lost when she saw a figurine of one of her favourite anime characters.
