Ran happily chirped into her cell phone, walking briskly down the crowded streets of Patoh City. She'd walked this path 100 times and she knew it well--it was the way to her best friend's house, after all.
She'd spent nearly a month trying to come up with a way to mark the occasion of Creation Day. Sure, maybe most teenagers stopped bothering with Creation Day gifts, but Ran always loved the holiday, and enjoyed picking out things for her friends. She'd finally settled on something perfect and spent another several weeks procuring it. Currently, it was in her bag, waiting to be given to its recipient.
"Hey hey, Shinichi, are you home right now? I'm in the neighborhood and I have something for you!" She couldn't keep the excitement out of her voice.
"Creation Day? Oh, so it is." He stared at the calendar on the wall as he ate his breakfast, and noticed the red circle around today's date. Did he do that? Probably not. He certainly didn't remember doing that, and he had an astounding memory. It was probably his neighbour, or maybe he was on the phone with the culprit now.
Considering how happy about it she was, it seemed like the chance there was high.
And she even had a gift for him. "Really? You're still doing gifts for it?" Shinichi hadn't gotten her anything. To him it was another childish holiday, even if he was technically of age to start his journey. Every year he wondered what made Ran so excited about it, but at least she was happy. "Yeah, sure, come on over. The door should be unlocked. See you soon."
"Eeehh? You didn't even know what day it was? Some detective you are." She laughed a bit at her own joke. Typical Shinichi. "And yes, of course I am!" She didn't feel the need to justify this decision--it seemed perfectly natural to her. "Alright, I'll see you soon!"
It didn't take her long to arrive--in truth she had called when she was already pretty close--and in short order she had let herself in.
"Shinichi, I'm here!" She slid her shoes off as she came in, closing the door behind her.
"Eh, what does that mean?" He pouted, but he'd probably call it frowning with some lip. Don't tell him he's pouting. Shinichi followed that frowning with lip with a sigh, nodding at nothing as he hung up, putting his phone away.
Before she arrived he looked in the reflection of the window, looking at how messed up his hair was. In a panic, he tried to fix it as best he could. Upon further realization he was still in his pajamas and slippers. Shinichi figured he had time to rush upstairs and get dressed.
But then her familiar voice echoed through the house and all hope in that regard was lost. It's not as if she hadn't seem him like this before, but it wasn't ideal. There was also a risk of a smack. "Oh, hey there. That sure was quicker then usual."
"Shinichi, you're still in your pajamas?" She chided, but really, she wasn't all that surprised. It was early, in his defense. (Though couldn't he have done something about his hair?)
"Like I said, I was in the neighborhood." She didn't add that she was in the neighborhood because she had specifically come to see him, though with Shinichi it was a matter of time before he figured that out, assuming he hadn't already. "Did you eat already?" She started heading towards his kitchen, figuring even if he had they could use the table in there, and if not, she could make something.
"Well, I just woke up and wasn't expecting such short notice on company." Although maybe he should have. It's not like this was an unusual occurrence, but they didn't have any sort of obligation today. Okay, so maybe people had been making it well known about the holiday, but he forgot that today was the actual day.
Staring into his reflection, he was doing his best to actual fix his hair without any tools. Time was of the essence, even if she was right there. "I know you had, but that speed was like you just outside my house or on the street. Were you coming to specifically drop off whatever it is you have? Sheesh, you could have given me more notice."
Shinichi looked at the spot he had been sitting, where one peice of toast was left remaining out of two. There was no sign of other foods to be seen, just toast. "Kind of, I hadn't actually finished yet and only had some toast. Like I said, I had just woken up."
Ran giggled a bit. Shinichi was still a little kid in some ways. She pretended not to notice him trying to fix her hair as she set her bag down on a chair at the table.
Of course, then he figured out that this had been her plan all along--of course, that didn't mean she was going to let him have this one. "Why would I come all the way here for just that?" That's not a no, but it would have to do. "Well I figured you would be awake by now!"
Just toast? That was hardly breakfast. "Sit down, I'll make something first. You need to eat a proper breakfast!"
Why would she come here just for that? It couldn't possibly be for him, right? Well, maybe. She did have that gift for him. Unless it was an extraordinary gift though, she could have waited. They'd probably have bumped into each other at some point during the day. As usual, Shinichi was overthinking things. "I guess it depends on what you got with you."
And then returned the frown with some lip. What was she, his mom? Wait, that was a disturbing thought. Scratch that. "As much as I appreciate the effort, I'm fine!" And yet, there he was, sliding back into his chair after finally being satisfied with taming his hair.
